‘We’re in a New Era’: How Climate Change Is Supercharging Disasters

Source: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/10/climate/california-fires-climate-change-disasters.html

Extreme weather events — deadly heat waves, floods, fires and hurricanes — are the consequences of a warming planet, scientists say.

As Los Angeles burned for days on end, horrifying the nation, scientists made an announcement on Friday that could help explain the deadly conflagration: 2024 was the hottest year in recorded history.

With temperatures rising around the globe and the oceans unusually warm, scientists are warning that the world has entered a dangerous new era of chaotic floods, storms and fires made worse by human-caused climate change.

The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) has confirmed that 2024 is the warmest year on record, based on six international datasets. The past ten years have all been in the Top Ten, in an extraordinary streak of record-breaking temperatures.

Key messages

  • The past ten years 2015-2024 are the ten warmest years on record
  • We have likely seen the first calendar year with a global mean temperature of more than 1.5°C above the 1850-1900 average
  • Six international datasets are used to reach the consolidated WMO global figure
  • 2024 saw exceptional land and sea surface temperatures and ocean heat
  • Long-term temperature goal of the Paris Agreement not yet dead but in grave danger

Make Sokoto Green: students plant trees to combat heat

Source: https://www.universityworldnews.com/post.php?story=20241218193136774&utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=GLNL0814

Strolling through a walkway that leads to the department of agricultural science where she studies, Rose John was overwhelmed by the heat of another sweltering summer afternoon.

The president of the Usmanu Danfodiyo University Sokoto (UDUS) chapter of the Junior Chamber International (JCIN), an organisation that grooms young leaders for positive change, was drenched in sweat.

“I was exhausted,” she recalls – her words testifying to how the Sokoto climate presents a formidable challenge to the daily life and health of all residents. The searing sun of Sokoto, located in an arid Sahel savannah with only a few hills, has earned it the description ‘sun city’.

Known as one of the hottest regions in Nigeria, the residents regularly endure temperatures that soar above 45°C between February and April and peaking at 47.2°C (117°F), one of the highest temperatures recorded in the country.

Extreme Weather and Climate: Revelatory Year | Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences

From the persistent droughts of southern Africa and Central America in the early part of the year to the more recent devastating extreme rainfall in Spain and the deadly Hurricane Helene along America’s east coast, 2024 has been a year of climate events that affected the lives of billions of people.

In a recent paper published in Advances in Atmospheric Sciences , an international team of scientists led by Dr Wenxia Zhang at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences, provide an overview of the characteristics and impacts of the most notable extreme events of the year, including rainfall and flooding, tropical cyclones, and droughts. Moreover, they discuss their causes, the role of global warming, and the challenges we face in the future to be “climate-resilient”. Dr Zhang and her team have been conducting an annual review of the global climate extremes since 2022, and this year they found it to be marked by exceptional rainfall and flooding.

“Most extreme events have a large random element in that they are subject to fluctuations in the weather, and occur when weather patterns set up in just the ‘right’ way. Some extremes are more likely when larger-scale drivers such as ENSO influence the weather patterns in a region,” says Dr James Risbey at CSIRO, coauthor of the study.

India to push green hydrogen, digital agenda at G20

India’s G20 Sherpa Amitabh Kant on Friday said while there would be a consensus on the various issues that are being discussed at the forum during New Delhi’s presidency, the country will be putting forth a developmental agenda, including digital public initiative and the drive for green hydrogen.

Speaking at the Confederation of India’s (CII) southern regional conference in Chennai, he said the country has been advocating inclusive resilient growth when one-third of the world is facing recession, while developed countries wanted to discuss war-related issues, like food, fuel, and fertilisers.

Africa urged to advance infrastructure solutions that integrate climate resilience

The Development Bank of Southern Africa (DBSA) has urged other development finance institutions to advance infrastructure solutions that integrate climate resilience and sustainable development in Africa and other developing nations.

This comes as Africa and Asia bear the brunt of climate impacts like droughts and floods, yet the financial resources required to adapt existing infrastructure are woefully insufficient.

Climate change in 2025: Can activism and business interests find common ground?

Source: https://www.citizen.co.za/news/south-africa/climate-change-2025-activism-business-interests-common-ground/

Climate change activism and international industry have been locked in ideological conflict over the use of fossil fuels. Crossing into the second half of the decade, the discourse between environmentalism, economic development and industrialisation shows no signs of cooling.

Climate change activists are steadfast in their belief that environmental doom lurks on the horizon should human rights not be prioritised over profit.

Global Online Certificate Course: Environment data, maps and GIS (Geographic Information System) for communication in 21st century

Source: https://www.cseindia.org/global-online-certificate-course-environment-data-maps-and-gis-geographic-information-system-for-communication-in-21st-century-12532

In today’s dynamic, data-driven world, mastering the skills of finding, processing, and visualizing environmental and sustainability data is essential for career advancement and professional success.

As we confront 21st-century challenges such as climate change, air pollution, water scarcity, urbanization, biodiversity loss, and sustainable development, the role of GIS and maps in environmental communication becomes increasingly vital.

By analyzing and integrating data and maps, we can gain a comprehensive understanding of sustainability and development issues. Among these challenges, climate change stands out as the most pressing global risk for the next decade, representing a profound social, political, economic, and environmental challenge.

The Power of Infographics: Climate Change

Source: https://www.scientificinfographics.com/35-climate-change?

While Earth’s climate patterns have been changing over a very long period of time, a notable acceleration is observed in the last 200 years, causing alterations in precipitations, ocean currents and weather events.

Human activities such as burning of fossil fuels, deforestation, industry, and agriculture are the main accelerators of climate change. These activities release massive amounts of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, generating a constant and irreversible rise of the Earth temperature, and a deleterious impact on life.
