ICJ to begin hearings in landmark Pacific climate change case started by students

A landmark case that began in a Pacific classroom and could change the course of future climate talks is about to be heard in the International Court of Justice (ICJ), writes Doug Dingwall for ABC Pacific.

The court will begin hearings involving a record number of countries in The Hague, in the Netherlands, on Monday 2 December. Its 15 judges have been asked, for the first time, to give an opinion about the obligations of nations to prevent climate change – and the consequences for them if they fail.

Africa steps into the global political and economic spotlight

Africa often flies under the global radar, despite its growing economic and political significance. However, that will change in the coming week, with South Africa assuming the G20 presidency on Sunday, and US President Joe Biden visiting Angola from Monday to Wednesday, probably his last overseas trip as president. Both moments are big firsts. No African nation has ever held the G20 before. Moreover, Biden’s trip is not only the first US presidential visit to Angola, but also his first to the continent during his own presidency, as he seeks to highlight to his successor, Donald Trump, and the wider West the strategic importance of Africa in the second half of the decade.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has said that he will use South Africa’s G20 year, which will include 130 meetings in the next 12 months, to put the spotlight on the huge political and economic potential of the continent. Indeed, Africa is increasingly seen to have the potential to become the main driver of global growth.

Climate Finance Gap in COP 29: Barrier to Inclusive Global Trade

In 2009, developed countries pledged to provide $100 billion annually to support developing countries facing a worsening climate crisis. More than a decade later, this commitments remains largely unfulfilled, leaving the most vulnerable countries to bear the brunt of climate impacts with insufficient resources (Nurhidayat, 2024). The 29th Conference of the Parties (COP29), held this year in Azerbaijan, with climate finance as its central theme, aimed to chart a new course. Negotiations focused on setting the New Collective and Quantified Goal (NCQG) to mobilize the trillions of dollars needed to drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions and protect livelihoods from the increasingly severe impacts of climate change. However, despite these lofty ambitions, developed countries only committed to provide $300 billion per year until 2035, a figure that is far from sufficient for recipient countries.

Climate extremes may have been behind 350 elephants dropping dead in southern Africa. During the middle of 2020, reports of elephants dying in their hundreds emerged from Botswana’s Okavango Delta. The ongoing pandemic at the time meant that research on the ground was limited and so the cause of the animals’ deaths was never fully explained.

Strengthening Maritime Cooperation, BRIN Inaugurates Indonesia-China Marine and Climate Center

The 8th China-Southeast Asian Countries Marine Cooperation Forum, held at the BJ Habibie Building in Jakarta on Thursday (28/11), served as a forum for Indonesia to strengthen maritime cooperation with China. On this occasion, the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) together with the Ministry of Natural Resources of China (MNR) signed a memorandum of understanding for cooperation and inaugurated the Indonesia-China Center for Ocean and Climate (ICCOC). This inauguration marks a significant step in marine and climate research, with a focus on enhancing scientific and technological capacity in the region.

Take advantage of the African trade initiatives – President

President Cyril Ramaphosa has urged South African companies to take advantage of the African Continental Free Trade initiatives. The President said this while delivering his annual address to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) in Parliament, in Cape Town, on Thursday.

On Sunday, the 1st of December, South Africa will officially take over the Presidency of the G20 group of countries. Together, these countries account for 75 percent of the world’s trade and 85 percent of global GDP.

African climate stakeholders have called for more green technology training in specialised higher education institutions as a transformative opportunity to curb surging unemployment and empower African graduates to take over the relay in the climate change drive.

During a panel discussion as part of a Green Education side event at COP29, climate change actors pointed out that, across Africa, the youth has shown innovative potential through emerging green technologies in the tech start-up sector that present unique opportunities to tackle climate challenges

International initiative launched to promote sci-tech access

China, Brazil, South Africa and the African Union have jointly launched the Initiative on International Cooperation in Open Science with the goal to promote the Global South’s access to global scientific and technological innovation achievements, the Ministry of Science and Technology announced on Thursday.

The initiative was one of the eight actions outlined by President Xi Jinping to support global development during the 19th G20 Summit on Monday.
