Jatna Supriatna earned his PhD in Biological Anthropology from the University of New Mexico, USA. He began his career as a researcher at the Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) before becoming a lecturer and later a Professor at Universitas Indonesia (UI).
In 2010, he founded the Climate Change Research Center (RCCC-UI) at UI and was appointed Co-chair of the UN Sustainable Development Solutions Network (UN SDSN). In 2018, he established the Institute for Sustainable Earth and Resources (ISER) and, in 2020, the SDG Hub at UI as part of the university’s efforts to contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). From 1995 to 2010, he served as Executive Director and later Vice President of Conservation International Indonesia.
In 2012, Jatna was appointed a fellow of the Indonesian Academy of Sciences (AIPI) and, since 2023, has served as Chair of the Basic Science Commission.
In 2018, he was elected Chair of the Indonesian Environmental Scholars Association. From 2014 to 2019, he was a member of the UI Board of Trustees. He is also involved in several organizations, including the Indonesian Conservation Foundation, the Bornean Orangutan Society Foundation, the National University of Singapore’s Centre for Nature-Based Climate Solutions, and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), where he serves as Co-chair of the Southeast Asia Primate Specialist Group.
Jatna has received several prestigious national and international awards for his contributions to environmental conservation. His name has been immortalized in three species: Tarsius supriatnai, a tarsier primate species from Gorontalo, North Sulawesi; Draco supriatnai, a flying gecko from the Togean Islands, Central Sulawesi; and Cyrtodactylus jatnai, a gecko species known as the Bali Gecko.
