With the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference now under way in Belém, Brazil, a new report from the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) shows that global average temperatures are set to exceed the goal of limiting the rise to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels.

While some annual averages have already crossed that threshold, the goal agreed to in Paris 10 years ago refers to a 20-year global mean temperature, which scientists now expect to be breached within the next decade. To stay below it, global greenhouse gas emissions would need to fall by 55% by 2035 – an outcome now seen as increasingly unlikely.
